Agahi’s schools are established to provide an alternative -- one that builds agahi (“awareness”).
Agahi’s schools are:
- Non profit;
- Community managed and owned, and enjoying community involvement through School Management Committees (established as CBOs / tanzeems) and Mothers Clubs;
- Using an activity–based approach that emphasises experiential and non-rote learning;
- Co-educational – with girls and boys taught together
- Entirely taught by teachers trained by Agahi with support from the Aga Khan University;
- Exclusively taught by female teachers who live in the communities; many are themselves ex-Agahi pupils
- Encouraging pupils to question and be inquisitive - to be aware (Agahi);
- Well equipped with basic furniture, classrooms and playground equipment;
- Teaching the official curriculum but using modern teaching methods.
Agahi schools were designed by professional engineers who also supervised their construction by local contractors. They all have playgrounds and washrooms/toilets – separate of course for girls and boys – staff rooms and administrative offices. In three we have playground equipment provided with the support of Right To Play – a Canadian NGO.
